Description
Most flower losses in a working florist’s week are preventable. Stems that wilt ahead of schedule, blooms that open faster than expected, flowers that arrive looking fine and deteriorate within 24 hours — these outcomes are usually the result of handling decisions that could have gone differently with a clearer understanding of what’s happening inside the stem. This module covers that biology in enough depth to make those decisions well.
You’ll work with:
- Vascular blockage, hydration mechanics, and the effect of stem cutting method on water uptake
- Ethylene sensitivity by species and how to manage it across mixed-flower storage
- Temperature, humidity, and solution chemistry in conditioning and cold chain management
Timeline: +/- 4 hours
Outcome: A working understanding of cut flower biology that makes conditioning decisions deliberate rather than habitual — reducing loss, extending performance, and giving you a basis for diagnosing problems when flowers don’t behave as expected.
